I bought a new dvd rewriter, but since installing the writer works fine but its making a strange cackle noise, and is driving me crazy!!

Dvd writer is fine, as i get same noise when i re-install my old cd-rom, maybe i disturbed somthing, but what??

Probably vibration inside it or around it.
Pull it out of its bay & verify that there is noyjinmg loose or shaking near it.

cd/dvd writers doesnt needs any installation its a swap device you have to restart your pc after putting into your cpu.

You have installed it correctly, it cant be an installation problem(I'm sure trust me) something is wrong with your drive, contact your vendor.

they just plug and play....i guess you have a knackered drive...send it back for an exchange
