A lot depends on your age. If you are old enough to hit the clubs, you certainly should be able to find a local adult recreation class in dance. Any dance class would help you get the basics. Also, community colleges usually have classes.
Another choice is to watch dancers out on the floor who are good, make friends with them and they can help.
Good luck and shake a leg!

Dance studios offer introductory classes at a reduced rate.
You can attend five weeks of classes for $99. After this, if you want to become a member, the price increases. In these five weeks, you can learn several basic dance steps. These are one on one instructions, and you do learn, and gain confidence. Some are classic, and easy to learn. Others are involved, and you know they need practice. You will also get exposure to the type of dance you're interested in now. There are usually great people there to meet and they are as interested in learning to dance as you are. You can benefit from learning ballroom dancing, too.
If it's the hip-hop and trend dancing, you may want to look in the free local newspapers, which offer dance classes.(you have to read every advertisement to find these, often near the beauty shop and spa advertisements) There are always free local newspapers, the Valley Breeze, the Observer, the Reminder, which advertise community businesses, including dance classes. Or place a free advertisement yourself. It is a good thing to learn to dance, and it does improve coordination. Good luck.

Go to your local park district to see what kinds of classes they offer. Chances are they will offer a hip-hop class that would help with the clubs. If you want something else, they probably offer ballroom type stuff that would really help coordination but might not help much in the clubs.

Try a hip hop class. The music will be familiar and they are not sticklers on technique. You can pick up quickly and soon your technique will improve. You will be suprised at how much you can take from the class to the clubs.

in your local library they have video tapes on dances.that's where i started to learn belly-dancing,now i own a dvd that combines modern dance and belly-dancing,it's not as hard as i thought it would be and i love the music from egypt, india, etc.even though it looks like a light exercise, believe it or not it's pretty intense....i like learning from home so i won't feel so embarrassed in a class.
