As someone who has worked in a doctors office before, let me help you out. Going to the doctor is one of the main factors when it comes to one's stress level being raised because most people associate "doctor" with "pain". When the nurse or lab tech goes to take blood, give you a shot, etc. they say "this won't hurt" because they want to try and calm you down. Usually they say "you'll feel a little pinch/pressure" or something like that at the doctors offices I've been to. Some people are calm anyway, but I've also heard patients scream bloddy murder at getting a finger prick, I've seen line-backer sized men pass out at the sight of a needle. The nurses/lab techs are trained professionals and want patients as calm as possible when doing tests so nothing happens. They can't take blood properly if someone's jerking around because they're afraid of the needle. THAT'S why they say "it won't hurt".

You are so right! They always do that..but also I hate when I ask a question and the Dr. does not even answer it! I have had many bad experiences! I will tell 1..yrs back I was real ill and went to my Dr. told him please take some test blood work etc. He says to me you look just fine..I have to demand he do the test!..I was so ill!!! Well turns out I was bleeding to death..and had to have major surgery!!! I never leave a Drs. now if I know I am right or I go to another one!!!!
Ciao

Dr.s are a "special" kind of people. Years of med school does stuff to thier heads, not too mention it's about a decade of being isolated from "the real world." As far as knowing whether it will hurt or not, they base it on what patients before have complained of.

They're not the experts. They listen to the drug reps. Now those are the real experts! Hahahahaha!

I once brought an entire hospital ward of staff running to my room to see what was happening.

The idiot gave me a painkiller needle to insert the drip, then proceeded to put it in the opposite arm to the pain relief!

I told him what I thought about that in no uncertain terms as you might imagine!

I generally don't even ask. Given my past medical experience, I just assume it will hurt... a lot. Pain and I are old acquaintances.

i guess they are just telling you what other people have said or just trying to calm you down. would you want them to tell you the truth and have them be like, yes this is going to hurt? of course not.

They guess. They usually analyze it and decide that it shouldn't hurt. They mostly have no clue. I guess it is better than saying, "This going to be AGONY for you, here we go!"
