If I remember the text correctly
"They fight. Mercutio is stabbed beneath Romeo's arm. Tybalt flies."
After some very pithy and bitter speaches Mercutio is escorted by Benvolio off stage, where he dies. It is most important that he dies offstage. If you can understand why then you are a fair way to understanding some major concepts of theatre.
For Tybalt and Romeo
"They fight. Tybalt is slain."
"Oh, I am fortunes fool." Exit Romeo

Mercutio is upset by Romeo's attempt to make peace with Tybault and fights him. Romeo attempts to stop the fight but accidently interferes so that Mercutio is stabbed. Tybault flees. Mercuitio jests about his wound but dies. Romeo is infuriated and takes after Tybault, fights him and kills him.
