That would be quite a job and the freon is supposed to be captured and not released, but the whirring noise could be just belt noise. I would check with a professional. ~

If you’re not an A/C tech, why are you bothering in the first place? What can you do to fix this problem? Releasing refrigerant into the atmosphere is illegal, it must be reclaimed. Did you go to a shop that doesn't touch Freon systems, but told you that they can fill it, if it's empty? Just have it serviced by a professional.

You have R-134 so it won't wreck the planet too bad if you just vent it. The harder part is when you fill it back up. You have to leave a vacuum on it for a while to get every last bit of air and water out before you put the refrigerant in.
It sounds like your compressor bearings are going.

Not to send a cheesy answer, but you need to take it to a certified shop to collect the freon from your system. R134a is cheap to buy yourself and refill, so you won't have any issues there, but it is illegal to let the gas escape into the atmosphere.
