Not where I live, but on a hiking/camping trip in upper New York State. He was sitting about 35 - 40 feet up in the air, cuddled on a branch next to the tree trunk!
This is its described range:
"The common porcupine can be found in most of Canada and the western United States south to Mexico. In the eastern United States, it can be found in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York and New England. "
So, you still might have a chance at seeing it -- but they are VERY shy!

Yes! Once I was on a short trip from Lead, SD to Gillette, WY and I had just put new tires on my car a week before. While coming home around 10 at night, one came across the road from the side and basically walked right into my tire! The next day, I got my tire replaced to find it had 17 punctures.
Now I live in the Brookings area and travel up north about an hour every day for work. I leave around 4am and they are everywhere alongside the road walking around with the rabbits, deer and raccoons.

I see them all the time in the hill country here in Texas. They are not dangerous per se. If you grab one you will get quilled, so just dont grab one! They can not throw quills and they won't attack you. They are fairly shy creatures from what I have seen. Dogs get hurt because they go after them.

I am originally from upstate NY. My daughter came upon one while leading a hike in the woods in Conn. If you have heard the song,"All God's Creatures have a Place in the Chior", it says the porcupine talks to himself. On the hike where she was a counselor, the porcupine was jabbering away to himself. They generally try to avoid a conflict and roll into a ball to protect their vital parts.

I saw on once in Maine, near the Kittery/Eliot area. Unfortunately I have also seen some as road kill, in New Hampshire.
