Its a common reaction, u know like a reflex, cause anyone can say, "hey i just ate some fruit" then automatically, without u knowing it u are going to sniff the air when the person is speaking to smell what kind of fruit they ate. It goes back to basic animal instincts where primitive animals used the different scents to locate their families and food, thats how dogs know what ur mood is, hence the "smell ur fear" component, different chemicals run though you when u are in different moods, excited= sex hormones or adrenaline, sad= hormones that make u depressed(hence the need for pills and prozac : ). ) and when a woman is pregnant etc.

Ew. I don't sniff the "contaminated" air when someone confessed that they just farted. My hands instantly go to my nose to prevent any unwanted gas going in through my nostrils!

I wouldn't. I'd be like, "Okay, I believe you..." Not even take a whiff, and just walk away.
