I don't know what version of AVG you have, but I currently have 7.5. This version catches all this garbage in RAM. It does not let it get to the hard drive. As long as you're on the Internet, your computer is inviting anything out there to come in. The purpose of your security program, whatever it may be, is to trap, quarantine, heal, and also gives you the chance to delete any other little things that like to infect, or slow down your computer, including Tracking Cookies. Check the version of your security program. It should update itself automatically. If everyday, it says it finds something, that's good, it's supposed to, but it should heal it automatically. If your confused on what the program is doing, contact AVG, but it does sound like it's working. It's when it doesn't find anything that you should worry. By the way, AVG take up less memory space than Norton.

Try booting the PC in Safe Mode and running either virus scanner. You get into Safe Mode by booting the PC and repeatedly pressing the F8 key until you get the Safe Mode option.
Some viruses load themselves during boot up so that their files are "in use" and can not be deleted by the scanning program. In Safe Mode the only files allowed to load are the mininum files needed to start Windows. Because the virus files are not loaded, they can usually be cleaned in Safe Mode.
If not, repost with the NAME of the virus, and we may be able to give specific instructions for that virus, as each is different.

The problem is that you aren't deleting the files. You're setting it to put the files in quarantine. In quarantine they are in a section on your computer where they can't affect your other files but its still there. Every time the one scan finds it it will take it from the others quarantine....and vice versa. They are constantly working against each other. I suggest either setting it to always delete or only use one anti virus program.
