There is little that can be done by many as opposed by an individual. What I mean is there are to many people in our society who pry on old people. They do this because they perceive them as weak and venerable. Same goes for adults prying on children.
Point is.. There is to much hate and violence in our society. where this comes from and how to stop it is a mystery, but as an individual you can make change.
You would be surprised how much older people take joy in a kind word, deed or just a show of respect. Yes there are some old people who are just mean and nasty, but the majority of them only want kindness and respect from the young.
Can you imagine the culture shock there going through ? Things are far different than when they grew up. Our values, morals and life style is different and I believe they feel like a lost generation left to only exist.
I live my life by treating others as I want them to treat me. I bite my tongue when older people show haste or rudeness and I tell myself that some day that could be me. A kind word.. A show of kindness goes a long way. Makes me feel good that I was kind to them because they deserve that respect and kindness no matter what.

In the latter days the hearts of many will grow cold and this is a prime example of the wickedness of this world. When we fail to respect our elders we are a depraved generation. This is what Secular Humanism teaches which is a severe evil of this world. Without God we are nothing and that is what we are becoming . . . an unGodly nation. Our society kills the mentally afflicted as with Terri Sciavo. Our society kills the innocent babies and sheds innocent blood. Without God we will go back to animal behavior which is survival of the fittest. Whenever man starts doing what he thinks is right in his own mind, man self-destructs.

Nothing. One day the people who treat the elderly poorly will be old themselves, and by that time the prejudice will have gotten worse, so they'll be even more badly treated than they currently treat the elderly now. What goes around comes around.

It's the same as with any other prejudice, one must recognise that "other" people are the same as you, we all feel pain, physical & emotional, we all ultimately want peace, safety & well being. None of these can be acheived fully for us as individuals if our fellow beings (all of them) are denied them.

Stop glorifying youth. Realize that all people age and hopefully with age comes wisdom. Right now, we so prize youth and beauty, two transient qualities, that we have sacrificed what's truly important.

Ask them to give a bit of respect back. Some times the rudest people you meet are the older generation. They seem to think they have a god given right for you to move out of their way and hold doors for them with no thanks.
