I am 25 weeks pregnant and I haev been craving coffee like crazy this past week. However, I have been ordering decaf because I'm worried about the baby and what caffeine will do. Do you know if the caffeine will effect him if I decide to get a caffeinated coffee one of these days to help me wake up?

One cup of coffee is not going to hurt your baby. I believe the limit on caffeine per day during pregnancy is 2 cups (8 oz. each). I have heard that studies have been done to prove that just smelling coffee helps to wake you up. After you've finished your decaf, you could try putting some coffee beans in a cup and keeping them near you to help you wake up as well.

You can still enjoy coffee and other caffeinated drinks during pregnancy as long as you don't overdo it - it is not necessary to cut out caffeine completely. The Food Standards Agency advises that a safe limit for pregnant women is 300mg of caffeine per day - about what you'd get in three mugs of instant coffee (100mg each) or eight cans of cola (up to 40mg each). Any more than that may possibly lead to babies having a low birth weight or even miscarriage.

I've been through two pregnancies and had a cup of coffee every morning with both of them. They were fine. The problem is that when you drink coffee, you have to be on the lookout for hidden caffeine in other stuff. It's probaby better to try and stay decaffeinated but if you really just have to, one cup of coffee won't hurt.

You are going through caffeine withdrawal.

Caffeine when it enters your blood, raises your blood pressure and when it gets to your brain it kicks the various receptors in your brain into overr drive. That is why you "wake up faster" with coffee. I personally would say stay on the decaf. Due to caffeine raising blood pressure.
