First, I would suggest you go into Safe Mode and check the Start Menu -- you may have your system confused. If you are not familiar with Safe Mode:

-- Turn your PC on or Restart. As soon as you see the black and white screen, press and hold the F8 key. Continue holding until you see a black and white menu. Safe Mode is F3 or F5.
-- Click Start, Programs, run your AV program, install, uninstall, whatever.
-- When it is finished, Restart.
-- You will probably find your icons messed up. No biggee. Drag them back into place.

If you are unable to correct the problem, and are unable to get online for a Windows Repair Tool, you might consider uninstalling WindowsXP. Turn the PC off for a minute, then insert the WindowsXP CD and reinstall.

Before you do this, from Safe Mode, copy any files you want to keep to floppies or flashdrives.

The answer is obvious. Get rid of XP, and get a good open source operating system for free at www.kubuntu.org. They will even send you the CD free and postage free.
