World War 1 began on 4th August 1914, when Great Britain & France declared war on Germany. The war ended on 11th November, 1918.

As with a lot of wars, exact dates are a matter of opinion; however:

June 28, 1914: Assassination of Franz Joseph
July 23 Austro-Hungary issued the July Ultimatum to Serbia
Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28
August 1,the German ambassador to Russia formally declared war.
On August 3, Germany declared war on France and invaded Belgium on August 4

So much for the start of the war. As for the ending, if you were Russian, the war ended on March 3, 1918. All fighting ended on November 11, 1918 at 11 am
