Is butcher block paper the same as easel paper?

I think the term can mean both.

Many people do refer to any thick strong paper as "butcher paper," and that type of paper comes on a roll and is used for easels, crafts, etc.

Nowadays though, I think that the thick strong paper that butchers actually use is also coated with plastic or silicone to make it non-porous on the inside. Buthcers may have used uncoated thick paper in the past though, and just wrapped it around the meats number of times.

(The coated type would be fine for regular painting, etc., if you use the porous side, but might be more expensive than "craft" butcher paper.)

No they aren't the same.
You can use the butcher block paper to paint on but a butcher can't use easel paper to wrap meat.
So they are the same in the respect that you can paint on both of them but different in that you can't wrap meat in easel paper

Butcher paper is treated and approved by the FDA. Easel paper won't have the coating.
