I was watching the game yesterday between SA and Sri Lanka and found Malinga's bowling action fascinating. I thought there was a rule of the angle at which the overarm can be placed - yet Malinga's seemed to be nearly horizontal. Under my beliefs over the rule, this would be illegal - but it obviously isn't - can someone explain why please?

Thanks!

From an India Times article:

"Side-arm bowling was popular in the 1800s, but I don't think we have seen much of it in the last 100 years. Underarm bowling was disallowed in the laws in the 2000 Code, but neither over arm nor side-arm are defined in the laws, or have ever been defined as far as I know."

"Malinga's action was debated because one is seeing a slinger in big cricket after a long time. Aussie Jeff Thompson troubled India on the 1977-78 tour Down Under. There was South African Garth Le Roux who played county cricket for Sussex but not much international cricket. "

As for Shane Warne being a great cricketer, all I can say is his mommy helps him enhance his performance, if you catch my drift.

Oh, and Warne was also found guilty of taking money from bookmakers and fined by the ACB. There were unprovent allegations of match fixing too.

There is no official angle at which the arm must be on release of the ball, and quite frankly I find the comments that people have made here quite absurd. The rule over bowling involves flex in the arm during bowling - chucking.

"In the modern game, the Sri Lankan pace bowler Lasith Malinga has a very distinctive action, which some call a round-arm action. This had earned him the name Malinga the Slinger. There are some who question the legality of this action, but it is legal, because his arm doesn't bend."

Also, for the record Murali has bowled all of his deliveries in with his arm in a full cast to ensure that his arm cannot bend as he bowls. And no, I'm not a Sri Lankan, I'm English.

He's known as Slinga Malinga because of his action. If you look carefully at his action you'll see his whole arm is straight when he delivers the ball and that is the crucial aspect of bowling. You may or not remember, cos the Kiwis still do, a match between Australia and NZ when needing (I think) 4 runs to win off the last ball, the Australian captain Greg Chappell instructed his bowler (brother Trevor Chappell) to bowl underhand which is a legitimate delivery. What is critical and regarded as chucking and therefore an illegal delivery is when the angle at the elbow is at more than 15 degrees.

I cannot explain Malinga's Bowling action it does seem quite unortadox however less not jump to conclusions and let the ICC advisors debate that with specialists.

Do not dis-credit people without proof when you have doubt. Those who do this are disgraceful and disgusting for it is vindictive and cruel to write such comments about individuals without concrete evidence.

To all those individauls who mallign others who have been exhonerated from such alegation your behaviour is appalling. The only reason individuals have been suspected in the past is because firstly the bowler is a threat to the opposing team or secondly because they may have a slight abnormality in the bone structure.

It is not a disabilty and it does not give them free will in bowling as they desire. The individuals still conform to Cricket rules and regulation.

Malinga's bowling action will look like he is chucking. But he isn't.
When a bowler is bowling his hands should have an angle of 90 degrees when the ball is released. He has that type of bowling. so he is bowling correctly and his action is different from all others. When he is bowling his go in a such a way that he gets a lot of Swing

Yes it is fascinating! Its similar to Aussie Jeff Thompsons action. Its legal..

Ranjeeh, a_kitchen, Parikin and Stephen: If an Australian did it, why is it wrong for a Sri Lankan to do it? And if the cricketers have no problem facing his action, how come it became a problem to you?
