I'm a professional massage therapist. I work at a massage school and have taken deep tissue training. I am so disheartened whenever I hear stories like these. Most people think of deep tissue as hard or painful. Our philosophy at Hands on Healing Institute, a massage school in Tujunga, is that any massage should be applied within the tolerances of the client. Digging in hard is definitely NOT the same as deep tissue work. If I was massaging someone who screamed, I would slow down and soften my touch. I would avoid causing such a reaction in the first place by easing into the body instead of pushing.
It is true that massage therapists work on the soft tissue of the body however, sometimes the soft tissue can become so gummed up that it can actually pull bones out of place. Even if the soft tissue is not the source of the malalignment, true deep tissue work can relieve much pain that goes with such problems. I'm not saying that it can cure scoliosis, but it really depends on the client's overall health.
Soreness can happen after any massage if the client doesn't drink enough water. And no, coffee and soda definitely don't count.
To find a qualified deep tissue practitioner, I would recommend a professional Hellerworker or a massage therapist who works with either the fascia (that is the connective tissue) of the body or structural integration technique. If you ask a massage therapist if they work with the fascia and they give you a blank look, keep searching. Also ask what their training is in and HOW MUCH training they've had in that style of massage. (8 hour weekend workshops do not cut it!) It's also possible to find a registered practitioner through the website www.hellerwork.com or www.rolf.org. You can ask more specific questions via email at info@hellerwork.com or info@rolf.org
I sincerely hope that you will consider giving massage another chance. Another VERY gentle technique I would recommend is Craniosacral. It resonates with some people more than others, but it's worth looking into. www.craniosacraltherapy.org or www.upledger.com info@craniosacraltherapy.org or edsrv@upledger.com

OUCH! Deep tissue massage always creates soreness, and its probably even worse when someone is already sore from scoliosis. Its unlikely that deep tissue massage, alone will have any benefit. It may have benefit when combined with traction, muscle strengthening, or some type of spinal manipulation. The idea behind deep tissue massage is to release muscles and connective tissues that might be pulling the spine. So, the idea of using deep massage is a good idea if there is some other treatment immediately following the massage, and the massage is used to enable the other treatment to work better. Otherwise, the effects of the massage may wear off within a day or so, and there is no lasting effect.

Massage won't treat your scoliosis. Surgery or bracing are the only definitive treatments for scoliosis and these depend on a host of factors-too complicated to discuss here. I ouldn't go back to that PT guy, if I were you. Something's not right with him.
