You got to look at it logically. Why do you like him? What qualities does he have that make you see him this way?
Is it because you are close because he is maybe in touch with his feminine side and therefore able to relate to you more. And because he is a man you find this attractive.
Try and just think of him as maybe, like one of your girlfriends. But trust me this will pass.

It is simple, if you can accept the fact that he's gay, you can also accept the fact that he cannot be romantically involved with you ever. It will be a frustrating and thankless pursuit for you in the end. Just think he's a friend, and keep it that way.

Maybe try telling him you're interested. That worked with me once. I was infatuated with this woman, who was straight, and told her. She was kind, but harsh at the same time and told me she wasn't into women. Perhaps your friend, if he's a good friend, will simply tell you kindly that although he appreciates your feelings, he won't ever be able to reciprocate them.
