Just spent ages getting years of accumulated cement and concrete from cement mixer drum, and want to keep it as clean as poss. Running it with water in after use seems un-enviromentally friendly.. any ideas?

My dad runs his own building contractor company and have seen him do this many a time - IT WORKS.!
When you have finished with the cement mixer, get as much of the crap out with a trowel. Quarter fill it with water and throw in a few apple sized hard rocks (reasonably smooth ones). Turn the cement mixer on (stand back cos of the splashes) and leave it for 5 mins. Turn it of any empty out the water leaving the drum facing down overnight to drain of the excess water.
GIVE IT A GO!

The only way I know is to put a bucket of water in the drum and then chuck in a few handfuls of stones - let it run for 10 mins and then tip it out -

after working with mixers for nearly forty years ..the only way to clean is with water and gravel or small bits of brick ..stopping it occasionally to check out and clean out the tough bits with a trowel ..you are using water when you run the mixer .so how you can say it not environmentally friendly to clean it is beyond me

Everyone I know washes the mixer with water after use, and sometimes between batches. I don't think dumping the water from this rinse is considered environmentally unfriendly.

I would think that some water, sand & a few small stones run through for a couple of minutes right after the last load would work well.

as lots of others said at the end of the day put stones in it and let it trundle, then rinse it out with clean water. you also could try painting it with a little diesel inside and out, this stops the cement sticking.
once it gets dirty, its very hard to keep clean.
hope this helps.

I agree that putting in some water and stones is the way to get it clean, but instead of stones use broken bricks as they have sharper edges ans are more abrasive.
