The role of a waiter/waitress is to take care of all of a guest's needs. Here's what I go through with a single table:
1. Greet the guests. I introduce myself and present any daily specials.
2. Take drink orders.
3. Ask for appetizers.
4. Ring in drink/appetizer orders.
5. Fill and deliver all the drinks or pick them up from the bar and provide bread, appetizer plates, napkins, etc.
6. Take entree orders and pick up menus.
7. Ring in entree orders.
8. Deliver appetizer and/or salads (if applicable).
9. Deliver entrees and ask for any additional items that might be necessary.
10. Deliver additional items.
11. Check back to make sure food is satisfactory.
12. Ask for and deliver desserts (if applicable).
13. Deliver check.
14. Process check (run credit card, give change, etc.).
15. Thank guests.
As needed I will provide drink refills or whatever the guest requires. I do my best to anticipate these needs so that the guest doesn't have to ask.
In the kitchen I am responsible for baking bread, refilling ice, making tea and coffee, and restocking lemons, creamers, glasses and plates.
I hope this helps.

Be over solicitous Take too long to take my order leave my dirty plate in front of me too long Not keep track of how full my drink is I waited tables for a short period of time and was fortunate to be taught the trade by some very seasoned professionals. All of the things I pointed out happen to me regularly in restaurants and they where all things that I was taught not to do. I those days, smoking was permitted and I was told to keep a lighter in my apron so if I saw a customer patting down for a light I could offer one. Clean forks and ashtrays where compulsory. Offering to pour the last of a bottle of wine. Being present without being obvious. The most vital bit of training I received was from the best waiter I ever worked with, he told me the 3 'tions' of waiting tables - preparation, observation and anticipation. I don't expect a lot from wait staff but I am often disappointed. No one takes the trade seriously. It isn't unskilled labour if its done right. There is a lot of different competencies that are required to be a good waiter as well as energy, stamina, organization, a quick mind and a good memory. Alas, most waiters are doing the only job they could get and have never been properly trained.

It doesn't matter where your are. The role of a waiter/waitress is to deliver the food to your table in an acceptable manner, to attend to things like water jugs, maybe serve/replenish wine glasses and attend to reasonable requests from diners.
They may also be responsible for setting tables, cleaning up tables and serving areas. They should not be expected to do heavy cleaning, such as floors and wall or do the laundry.
However, it depends on the agreement between them and employer.
