In fact, life can be pretty lonely for the super slim, because women overwhelmingly want girlfriends who are 'fatter than them', according to the British Body Idol Survey 2007, commissioned by NW Magazine and nwdaily.co.uk.
Size 0 is "attractive"
It appears that women just don't want the competition of slimmer friends - especially as a staggering six out of 10 British women now think 'Size 0 is attractive' (59%) and 58% think 'men also find Size 0 women attractive'.
A paltry 3% of women are 'happy to have thinner girlfriends' whereas the vast majority (97%) prefer to 'step out with friends who are fatter than them'. And if you do end up on a night out with your friends, watch out - more than three-quarters of women admit they are 'jealous of slimmer friends' (76%).
"I feel fat"
Nearly all women say they have 'felt fat before a night out' (94%) and half 'go without food all day' and one in 10 say they 'make themselves sick so they can fit in a dress' - and the last thing they want is to be surrounded by thinner, slinkier girlfriends.
Six out of 10 women also say their so-called 'friends' have 'criticised' their body shape and size and four out of 10 say 'even their mother urges them to lose weight'. A fifth of women say they 'can't sit at their office desk without their work colleagues suggesting they slim down'.
No wonder 84% of all women say they would 'feel happier' if they could lose weight and two-thirds of women say they have 'tried to diet in the last month' alone (65%).
Helen Johnston, Editor of NW Magazine, says: "We all understand the anxiety of going out with a drop-dead gorgeous skinny mate who gets all the attention and leaves us feeling like her fat invisible friend. And there's nothing worse than knowing whatever you wear your slimmer friend is always going to look better than you do."
Skinny celebrities
Survey respondents point to celebrities like Victoria Beckham who even manages to make her new best friend Katie Holmes 'look like a gangly giant' and Coleen McLoughlin who 'frequently steps out surrounded by a posse of fatter friends'.

Absolute rubbish. Size 12 is gorgeous, just right in my opinion. I know some girls that are size 14 and 16 that I think are very sexy and not fat at all.
Curvy is good ladies! :)

I am a size 12 but I am also 5' 10" so if I were any thinner, I'd look like an anorexic. I've modelled and taken part in beauty contests and my size was never an issue. Size 12 is healthy and men love it so to all you pre-pubescent males leaving answers here, put the blow-up doll down and get a real girlfriend you morons!!!

A size 12 is not fat! I am a size 12/14 and I am not fat! I think that people should accept each other for who they are and not what they look like. Some guy once told me in a pub I would be "attractive if you were thin". That is not the sort of guy I would want to find me attractive as it is so shallow. So long as you are healthy... just be you life is way to short to worry about what other people think of you.

To be honest I think men are more interested in your face than your stomach! If you have a pretty face and make a little effort when it comes to style then your size won't matter. Also as someone else commented, it depends on your height. I am 5ft and would look fat as a size 12 but some of my friends who are a lot taller than me are a size 12 and don't look the slightest bit chubby. Concentrate on how clothes compliment your unique figure and style and forget what size they are! Anyway, would you rather look like a sexy woman or a 7 year old boy?!!

I find it startling, and more than a little disconcerting, that in a world still plagued by poverty, violence and injustice that we spend time and energy worrying about something as superficial and trivial as dress size.
The size 0 debate is the product of a bored and comfortable society. Do women in some of the poorest parts of the world worry about being a size 12 I wonder? We need to be bigger people-if you'll pardon the pun-fight for what really matters. After all, is her body, her size, really the only thing a woman has to offer the world?

OH MY GOD, i cant believe the negative comments already! I would kill to be a size 12, i dont regard it as fat at all, nor do i regard a size 16 as fat. I cant believe all the negativity, i have struggled with my weight all my life, if people regard a size 12 as at i may as well end it all now! I would love to lose weight but still dont see myself as obese, just carrying extra weight, i'm tall so carry it better than others. I hate this size 0 culture, so many people are encouraged and led to believe that they are fat and encouraged to slim down. But all those size 6 and below models make me feel ill, how can anyone find skin and bone attractive. And there are numerous health issues, as there is also with obesity. I'd see a 12/14/16 as a happy medium so please dont think you're fat. Peoples attitudes stink, and something desperately needs to be done to educate people (young girls in particular) that this size 0 culture is seriously bad and will risk their health.

I'm a size 18 so I'm fat. I actually looked pretty good at size 12, but that was a long time ago. I've not been below a size 14 since my daughter was born 23 years ago. I'd love to be a size 12 again.

I am also a size 12 and my body fat % and body mass index consider me overweight. However, I don't consider myself fat as in obese. I am not terribly happy with my appearance some days. And I wish I was not as heavy as I am. But I wish to lose weight purely for health reasons with diabetes and cholesterol that run in the family genes.
I really could care less what size my friend are. So long as they are nice!
According to most surveys, i am completely average in size, height and weight. The model world consideres anything in double digit sizes as plus model. There were two girls on the current season of Top Model who are size 8 and both are deemed plus size.
One thing you also have to realize that a size 12 on one person is not the same on another. It all varies depending on height, weight, body make-up etc. A size 12 on a person like me who is 5'4" and weights 170 could be totally different on a person who is 5'10" tall. We all carry weight differently.

Gog no! I'm a size 16 and until I had my son at the age of almost 31 I was always a size 8. I would give anything to be a size 12. They need to get in the real world if they think a size 12 is fat. As the saying goes only dogs like bones and men like MEAT

I wish I was a size 12. I am too tall to fit in normal womens jeans. Me at my skinniest, I was a size 9.
Most of the people in the US are overweight due to pure laziness. It involves fast food, to busy to exercise, and just not taking the time for themselves.
I have in the last year, gained 30 pounds. 6 months ago, I started working from home. 3 months ago joined Weight Watchers. 1 1/2 months ago, started regularly working out at the gym. To date, I have lost 23 pounds or so (I weigh in today). I have more energy to do things now, so I am happier with myself and my accomplishments.
You have to make time for yourself and you can do it.

We've become conditioned to believe everything the media throws at us. In one breath there are all these size 0 dogs bones that we should 'aspire to' and the next it's kids are getting obese and burdening the NHS with their weight related problems.
No way is a size 12 too fat - I'd love to be a size 12 but let's just say I'm somewhat big-boned lol!
