Clean your house and get a cat

If you have full fledged rats, I would call an exterminator. Mice are a little bit easier to handle, with a cat and a few traps. I would put down some traps in the meantime, and possibly get a feline furry companion, but from what I have seen, best way is the big guns!

Good luck!

Use the wooden snap type traps for the ones already inside. Seal all of the potential access points in your homes exterior.

You have to select materials they can't easily chew through. I came upon this inexpensive solution: I had a bucket of rusty large framing nails. I used these along with Great Stuff spray expanding foam. Squirt the foam into the cracks and larger openings to make it weathertight. Then poke enough of the nails into the foam as it thickens to make it impossible to be chewed through! Spray a bit more foam to cover and lock in the nails. Has been keeping rats, mice and squirrels out for 8 years now!

Clean your house, and get rid of any garbage near the foundation. Traps and poison. I put the traps where I have seen droppings from the rats. Try to keep open food out of your pantry. The pantry is another favorite place for teh vermin.
