A development Methodology is a set of protocols and procedures that guide the development process in a coordinated fashion.
There are 4 standard Methodologies in software development. The first is "Waterfall", where specific target dates are met, and the development continues forward without reversing it's course.
The next is RAD, or Rapid Application Development. This is where a project is in a continual Development/Test/Modify phase until a workable solution is developed.
The third, and most common, is SDLC, or Software Development Life-Cycle. This a set of protocols and procedures that guide the development process through the series of analysis, development, testing, and modification.
The newest, is MSF, or Microsoft Solutions Framework. This methodology is a requirement for MCSD certification, and combines some the better aspects of Waterfall and SDLC.

a methodology is the plan in which you take to try to find the answer to something. Are you doing research or soemthing? You have to have a question in mind for you 'project' in order to come up with a methodology. For examply, if you wanted to find out if drugs have an effect on school work.. you would pose that question first and then decide how you would find the answer.. like, will you conduct surveys? Of who? College students? High School students? How would you decided if drugs have an effect or not?
hope that helped a little

Actually, methodology is a study of methods, and a highly misused word.
You could call OMT and Yourdon methodologies. Or maybe SEI-CMM, though that's more a way of measuring whether you have a methodology.
Let's call them methods, which is what they are.
ISO-9000 was a method, until people learned they could use the project plan to say they weren't going to do anything :D
