Ah. You don't see alot of these. I'm wondering if maybe your brother is or knows someone struggling with a drug addiction? But that's besides the point.

Methadone Hydrochloride - 40 mg

Its manufactured by Mallinckcrodt Pharmaceuticals. It's one of the largest doses of methadone available. The perforations on the back are guides to cut the pill so it may be administered in smaller doses. And with the 2540's, they nearly always are. This is somewhat disturbing that your brother would have his hands on a drug of this variety.

Methadone is an opiate. Though it is synthetically produced, it is derived from the same source as morphine. Because treatment of certain narcotics is extremely painful and takes a huge toll on the patient, this medicine is used in treatment - specifically, heroin. Yes, it produces many of the same effects as the drugs themselves, however it is an analgesic for the body's opioid receptors (the modules that primarily utilize the drug). It is used to "bring down" the patient - relieving them, somewhat, of the tormenting exposure of quitting "cold turkey".

If your brother has pills of this sort in his possession, there are a few things you may infer from it. If he's not being treated for physical withdrawals from drugs, then he's getting these from someone else (obviously). Which would also bring you to the conclusion that he is either: a) hopefully, holding on to them for someone; b) selling them to his peers; or c) is taking them himself.

Watch out. Methadone is a very addicting substance. Its a stepping-stool down for heroin addicts. If you don't feel comfortable confronting him on your own, you must tell someone who can talk to him.

Hope this helps you.

Some things are best left alone and private but if you really want to know read on.

Its a 40mg methadone tablet, used in drug rehabilitation programmes to treat narcotic addiction.

To get these tablets you normally need to be part of a detox programme, so the positive side is that if they are your brothers, just beacuse you found them on his nightstand doesn't mean he's taking them, then he is getting treatment for his problem.

The plus sign can indicate that if needed, the tablet can be made into 4 quarters. M may be manufacturer like Merck? You can check with a pharmacist, but why you want to know?
