The cause of sinusitis is due to the blocked exits of the cavities in your skull. These blockages are usually caused by infection. Because of the blockages the fluid, which normally exits from these cavities and drains into your system, builds up and causes pressure on your nerves resulting unbearable headaches. This pain is excruciating especially when there is a sudden change in the air pressure (i.e. during the landing of a plane if you are passenger, sudden change of the weather from fine to rainy).
Now what to do about it. Firstly, you should go and see your GP who will send you to have an x-ray picture of your sinuses [1] This is a painless and it is nowadays extremely safe procedure. Nowadays, they use computed tomography (TC) which exposes the brain to a minimal radiation and by the aid of computers, you can have a 3-D picture of the inside of your skull. With the aid of this they will be able to tell you what to do. You might need just a dose of antibiotics or a spray (not all sprays are dangerous, I have been using one for at least 15 years without any side effects.). The last resort may be an operation which is not always successful and they try not to take this option.
One of the things that you can do yourself is to reduce your intake of dairy food (cheese especially, milk and milk products like milk puddings etc., eggs.). These help to increase the fluid in your sinuses and increase the pain. So eat less cheese. I know how painful it is but if you take the steps I gave above, you might decrease the pain. Good luck. I hope this was helpful.

Hi Dawn.
The cure for sinusitis is steam inhalation, nasal irrigation, hot fluids such as tea or chicken soup, and plenty of rest. Aspirin or paracetamol tablets and decongestants are some of the medicines commonly prescribed for sinus infections. If the symptoms continue for more than 48 hours, the pateint should be started on antibiotics or nasal steroids. If you don't treat the sinus infection pretty early, it could even cause bronchitis and pneumonia and damage the sinuses and cheekbones. You would then have to go for nasal surgery to repair the damage.

When the sinus infection refuses to respond to medication, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is the most efficient treatment.

Prevention is always better than cure. Stop smoking, because smoking is one of the chief stimulants of sinusitis (sinus infection). Take an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant, especially before air travel. Drink plenty of fluids, so the nasal discharge remains thin, and use antihistamines for controlling attacks. Please look article: http://www.askedweb.com/askedweb/Are_You_Being_Troubled_By_Sinusitis/

I've not known anyone to use an inhaler for sinusitis, however it does not mean that it can't work or does more damage. I have many clients who come to me with head/ sinus related problems such as hayfever, sinusitus and tinitus needing help in the relief of unwanted symptoms. I specialise in Hopi Ear Candling and have found this to be very beneficial for ailments such as these. It is an alternative method to ear syringing and is completely safe and effective. Most clients come back for a follow up treatment - I usually recommend up to three treatments over a period of a month. If this is a treatment you would be interested in having, most sessions would cost appoximately £25 - £30. If you want more information on this therapy you can either contact your local complementary centre or visit www.biosun.de which tells you about the history of Hopi Ear Candling and how they work.

Have you tried inhaling steam? It gave me a little bit of relief. You are right about using too many decongestants they can do more harm than good in the end as they can cause your sinuses to swell up.Have you seen your GP as you may have bacterial sinus infection and need antibiotics.Hope you feel better soon!

Boost your immune system. Take Powder of Aweto (a Chinese herbal medicine), eat lots of fruit and veg containing Vitamin C. There is no instant cure, but with these simple remedies, my chronic sinusitis disappeared in 5 months.

I have sinusitis and got rid of the last bout after 3 weeks. if its infected then you will need antibiotics, however over the counter remedies are very good. try Actifed or Mucron both good. there is also Sudafed which you can take paracetamol with for the pain. try alternating hot and cold compresses over the bridge of the nose or steam inhalation with some drops of Olbas oil or Eucalyptus oil, just beware of very hot water and scalding. hope this helps it doesn't last forever just feels like that!

Search for "neti pot" on Amazon.com, that will flush out your sinuses and you won't have any sinus problems again when used on a regular basis. Our sinuses need to be cleaned just like the rest of our body, it filters out everything we breate in, and using a neti pot is just as normal as changing the filter in the furnace on a regular basis. Hope this helps.

I started using a 3-prong attack 4 years ago and I no longer get sick.

(1) It's gross, but a salt water snort will astonish you in it's effectiveness. Your head should be tilted to the side so the gunk flows out your mouth.

(2) Finish with Sino-Fresh.

(3) Take Guaifenesin to keep your eustasian tubes cleared. Used to be only in Robitussin, but Sudafed makes one product they put on the shelves in the summertime and the new Mucinex product has it but it's waaaay expensive.

Best advice is don't get sick - keep your hands washed and don't touch your face. If your problem is allergies, change your pillowcases and wash your hair more often so you are breathing in pollen all night.

Sinusitis is an auto-immune disease. The cause is inadequacy of immune system to completely overcome nasal irritation which naturally happens from time to time due to abundance of toxins in the air or weakened health condition. The solution is to boost your immune system. Try taking 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil every meal. It could boost your immune system and overcome the sinusitis, like what I experienced. If you need further clarification you may email me at agnutricuetical@yahoo.com. Good luck!
