Been playing guitar for thirty years Jimi's music is easy to play simple chords, great blues stylings, his style created Robin trower, and helped Stevie ray Vaughan. He opened a frontier that created hundreds of Players Even Ed van Halen
stated in an interview that he was one of his hero's, technically, He was a feel player, let the music flow through him like a conduit, Created a multi layer sound that is hard to duplicated. I know been there, When processors finally came out it was easier to create that sound. When all my friends went to smaller amps, I still use a large stage rig Its the only way to sustain that sound. and the presence. Jimi was a exellent player, Clapton on the other hand is a simplistic blues player any two year student can play his material with ease. His library of music is impressive. He doesn,t wander out of his comfort zone all that much. however. his lead work was and still is a thing of wonder. his pharsing is a thing of beauty. supurb sound on stage, have listened to a lot of his live recordings, that is where a players true metal is evident Jimi on the other hand. I listened to his BBC recordings,His lead playing was sporadic, I wish I would have had the chance to hear him in some of the clubs he did back in the sixties. I could make a better analyses. From my experiance's Clapton is a better all round player , Jimi Had his moments of greatness, And I know that if he hadn/t came out , perhaps I might not be playing, For me jimi's fantastic,But clapton has My vote....

After considering all your criteria, I'm choosing Eric Clapton, tho with a very small margin over Jimy Hendrix.

Jimmy Hendrix created his own genre of music.Listen very closely to his version of the Star Spangled Banner. The instrument literally speaks to you.He was a pioneer in the electric guitar arena.Eric has the best all around talent, but as a player can't match Hendrix. In my opinion it's quite possible no one ever will. There is a young man who plays Jazz that could be close, but in that genre he will never achieve the same notoriety.

Hendrix. Clapton spent the 70's & 80's totally wasted because he couldn't get over the fact that Hendrix was everything he wanted to be.

IMO Clapton. His guitar work is more emotional. But it's almost too close to call. And BTW I'm going to see Clapton Tuesday night.
