Checkers & Reversi are 2 examples I can think of , can you think of any others.

Chess requires strategy but is difficult to learn ...... so cannot use the same.

Ludo , Battleships etc require dice & too much luck ..... so cannot use the same.

I play lots of games online at http://www.brettspielwelt.de
Here are some that work fairly well as 2 player, aren't too hard to learn, and involve some strategy and usually some luck as well (all are somewhat subjective criteria).
Alhambra, Backgammon, Bazaar, Bluff, BohnDuell (a form of Mancala), Café International, Can't Stop, Carcassonne, Cartagena, Caylus, Dvonn, Einfach Genial, Geister, Go, Halali (Tally Ho!), Manhattan, Manitou, Paris Paris, Piranha Pedro, San Juan, Sankt Petersburg, Street Soccer, Thurn und Taxis, Tongiaki, Trans America, Yinsh

You can also look up these and other games at:

RISK! It may sound overwhelming at first, but it really is not. It's mostly dice throw and strategy. (Some basic math is needed. Once you get the hang of it, it's no problem.)

Or you can make the dot grid game....where you draw a line from one dot to the next to make a square (or triangle if you want to mix it up).

Connect-Four?

My games are usually foreign, but here are some good ones.

Settlers of Catan: The Card Game (not really cards, but thick carborad tiles)
Mileborn
Spaceships of Catan
Porto Rico
Startego
Guillotine

All of these require strategy and foward thinking. I highly recomend all of them.

I would suggest chess as it really is not difficult to learn. It is difficult to master or even become more than just average at playing, but not difficult to learn. Alternately you could try the game GO or Shogi.

Stratego is a great one!

You should be able to find it at most board game stores. Or you can try something like Ebay.
