I'd allways been a bartender. But I have 3 kids! Late hours! No benefits! Now I have that. And great day hours.

I was a cashier at WalMart for 7 years and overall, I liked it. In spite of the claim that it attracts rednecks, I've seen people from all walks of life come through my line.

As far a schedules were concerned, it depended on who was doing the schedule. One guy got all the registers covered & gave people the time off they needed. Others weren't as good at it.

Working in a retail store it tough. You have to stay nice when customers grumble & blame you for stuff. The hours aren't too predictable. If it is slow in your department another department will "borrow" you to help them stock or something.

I think all the people who complain about "slave labor" are just not used to working.

No not at all. I know a many a single moms who work at wallmart and can give their kids a good life. they have benefits and believe it or not good wages. You know i worked at the portrait studio there and was making some really good money. The hours weren't all too bad and i was able to put money away at the same time. Just an idea.

No, no job is bad if you are able to support your family. I've known people who've had bad experiences at Wal-mart, but that doesn't mean you will.
I worked in the mall for five years myself, even though i went to college. I got a better job at a college library, but it took a lot of time to get where i'm at now.
Good Luck! and I hope this enables you to support your family and be there for your kids.

If you are 17 and live with your mom, or if you are retired and work at Wal Mart to fill your empty time with, working at Wal Mart is a good thing. If you are in your 30's, have 3 kids and bills and just figured out you want to work at Wal Mart for your career, it is a bad thing.
If you need to ask if working at Wal Mart is a bad thing, well, nevermind.

Work wherever the hell you want to. If it's better for you, than it's better for you, especially since you have a family. That is obviously the thing that is most important for you. You will never find work at a place that has done everything right in their entire history. So don't listen to people's foolishness, because that work place is called 'fantasy land', it doesn't exist. Peace!

Of course not! you gotta do what's right for you. Plus, now, you probably get benefits, whereas bartending...? did they have any? (insurance, stock options, etc).
you're supporting yourself and your kids... A LOT better than asking for any handouts.

As they say in your work, you pick you poison in life. Walmart? The story is poor wages, bad benefits. Tending bar--por wages, no benefits, late hours.

Neither sounds great.

no i do not think you have made a bad choice at all. your children need you. i used to wait tables in a bar so i know what you mean. the money is great but is it worth losing time with your children watching them grow up instead of sleeping it away. i think you made a great decision.
