You need to use a good tested water based leather protector. This will act like a scotchgard and will inhibit dirt and oils (especially body oils) from being absorbed into the leather which is what does the damage. It will also make cleaning easier.

Make sure you choose one that has been tested as many on the market do not protect. Leather conditioners are not protectors and should not be used as they often contain waxes and oils themselves which will do no good.

I have just the solution for protecting your leather sofa, Leather upholstery

Prevent leather from cracking by polishing regularly with a cream made of 1 part vinegar and 2 parts linseed oil. Clean with a damp cloth and saddle soap.
