No I don't think it's true that women can't read maps and certainly not true that men are better at it! Generally it is true that men will not stop and get directions if they are lost. If they could read maps, they wouldn't be lost in the first place!
I've used maps to drive across the United States and have had no problems.

I don't understand how a person can be unable to use a map but it seems to be true. I can say I've travelled with some female relatives and it drove me nuts because at one point the driver got lost and I kept telling them to rely on the map and signs while my mother wanted to keep relying on the previous directions she had been given which involved five or six red lights, all kinds of road marks- which could be wrong and my grandmother always wanted to circle the block to skip traffic, etc. After that I always insisted on taking my car whenever I went anywhere because I do maps fine but not directions. I never stop and ask for directions because they always give it in my mother's language. . . you take a right by the red light, then turn left by the old Wal-Mart, stay straight until you see a Texaco where you take another right. . . like I'm really going to be able to know what all this means if I'm new in town.

I make my living as a driver and I have to read maps to reach stopping points or my destination. But I have always liked cartography and have a fairly large collection of maps including aerial views, sections of the ocean floors, and out of date maps that no longer hold true, yet are collectible for their historic value.
So being a woman, I have to say some women can and some cannot. Sex has nothing to do with having an aptitude for direction.

It's an individual skill, orientation and navigation. Some men and some women are very good at it. Some men and some women are not very good at it. I must have a genetic disposition for it or something because I can orient and navigate naturally like a state of the art GPS device. I canoe in the dark of night a lot, with nearly blind eyes, hike through the Rockies for days, spelunck and such, and never get lost or turned around, so to say. It's not a gender thing. My mother, on the other hand, could not point to the horizon where the sun rose every day. She couldn't locate east or west if her life depended on it.

It's funny that this question came up. My husband and I go on a road trip every year. Usually I drive because I am a better driver than he is (he's had 4 wrecks--I've had none). So naturally, you would think that my husband would read the map...NO...I get to do both read and drive (not at the same time...I memorize part and then look again as needed).

I believe that any woman who drives a car for sure can read a map (if she has her glasses with her cause the print is so small). I can read a map.

no it's not true. I take a map with me each time I travel and can't move or go anywhere without it. It's not that complicated.

It cannot be true. It is because men and women are created by a Supreme Being. Both men and women have intelligence and free will. Both can also be genius, etc...
