YES!!! They will be one of the better teams this year for the 2007 season, and will WIN this season's Super Bowl (to be played in 2008, obviously). Perhaps they'll win a few more Super Bowls in the next 5 years?!
Why, do you ask? Very simple. The Chargers have a VERY WELL BALANCED team, meaning a very good offense, and an amazing offense, and a solid special teams. Also, a team that has got a lot of character guys that form a very cohesive team. Also, the Chargers have some of the best players in the NFL to their respective positions.
BEST IN THE NFL:
Best RB in the NFL: LT
Best FB in the NFL: Lorenzo Neal
Best TE in the NFL: Antonio Gates
Best LB in the NFL: Shawne Merriman
2nd best LB in the NFL (for applying pressure, or sacks): Shaun Phillips
Best DT in the NFL: Jamal Williams
Best backup RB (not 2-back system) in the NFL: Michael Turner
Best special teams player (not kick returner) in the NFL: Kassim Osgood
Best as a group:
Best scoring OFFENSE in the NFL: the Chargers
Best OFFENSIVE LINE in the NFL: the Chargers
Best FRONT 7 in the NFL: the Chargers
MOST sacks by a defense in the NFL: the Chargers
Top 5 in the league on the Chargers:
QB: Philip Rivers
C: Nick Hardwick
LT: Marcus McNeil
K: Nate Kaeding
Yes, the Chargers have SOME areas where they need work. But what team doesn't? The Chargers DEFINITELY need a FAST WR that can STRETCH the field! Also, a soft pair of hands would be great. ENOUGH 6 foot 5 WR's!!!! Just put this into perspective: the entire regular season, the Chargers' starting WR's had 0, yes, ZERO TD's the entire season! And the WR with the most percentage of receptions of the entire team in a season was only a measly 12%! The crazy thing is that the Chargers were the #1 scoring team, LT had crazy yards & TD's, and had VERY LITTLE HELP from the starting WR's!!! To top that off, Rivers had 3388 passing yards and 22 TD's!!!
Another area is the secondary, although it has gotten much better. Jammer has become solid, and the addition of McCree is awesome. I think with experience, Cromartie will be very good. He just needs to have some more starts under his belt. Norv Turner should do that, unlike Schottenheimer, who is HESITANT to start new, young talent. Marty didn't start Merriman until almost mid-season in 2005, and didn't really start Cromartie in 2006 until late in the season (yes, that was not too bright to wait to start Cromartie until the Bolts played the Bengals against CJ "OCHO CINCO" who TORCHED Cromartie and the Bolts' secondary with 260 yards and 3 TD's).
Also, people say the coaching staff is another weakness, and that it will take a while for the team to gain cohesiveness. Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron became head coach of the Dolphins. Just remember, Norv Turner was the offensive coordinator for the Bolts in 2001, and INSTALLED the very same offense that they use, when LT was a rookie. This same offense will make a smooth transition for Rivers and the offense. Also, Turner is very good at developing quarterbacks. He did good with developing San Diego native Alex Smith, and did VERY WELL developing some guy named Troy Aikman. Also, people say Turner can't win? If that's the case, I wonder how the Cowboys won 3 Super Bowls in the 90's with Turner calling the plays? Don't forget that! Too bad Drew Brees is gone from the Bolts, as he was a big fan of the Cowboys too and of Norv Turner's offense. Also, Brees and LT were good friends in high school and college as they are from the same area in Texas, more or less. They got on the same plane together from Texas to San Diego, and made a pact to win a Super Bowl for San Diego. It's all good, as the Saints will be a good opponent and victory in the Super Bowl (which it should have been this year: Chargers vs. Saints. It would have, and can be, a great story, with a new QB, Rivers, against Brees, who would be playing against the team that "didn't want him anymore", of course referring mostly to A.J. Smith). Also, LT and Brees, are good friends. Amazing, they both shared the Walter Payton Men of the Year honors! They were also competing for the MVP this year, with it obviously and deservingly going to LT. Don't get me wrong, I do like Rivers. He will be AWESOME! He already is, but he's still developing. With experience and some tweaks, he'll be much better.
Also, there are worries of Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips leaving the team to be the head coach of the Cowboys. However, the new Defensive Coordinator, Ted Cottrell, uses a very similar 3-4 defense that Wade Phillips implemented. In fact, he learned it from Phillips himself in Buffalo, which should make for a smooth transition for the defense of the Chargers! By the way, as a side note, the new Linebackers coach for the Chargers is none other than Ron Rivera, former DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR for the NFC Champions, the Chicago Bears! Talk about helping out Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips develop even MORE!
One last thing, the Lightning Bolts have a tougher schedule. Although it will be more difficult to duplicate the 14-2 record of last year, the Chargers will still do well and win the AFC West. The tougher schedule this year includes playing the NFC Champions Bears on opening weekend LIVE on FOX (which could have easily been the Super Bowl matchup vs. the Chargers last year, but I like the Saints over the Bears more). Also, the Bolts have to play the Colts, Ravens, and Patriots. Even the Titans are a good challenge nowadays. Not to mention the Chargers have to play in a tough division with 3 of the 4 teams being playoff contenders (no chance for Raiders, obviously).
The Chargers WILL WIN the Super Bowl! Expect a few Super Bowl trophies for the Chargers to possess in the next 5 years! No one else in the league deserves it more than the classy LT! He is the best player in the league, and the classiest of all! He is the embassador to the NFL... God Bless you LT, and I'm sorry for your father. You and your family have my prayers!
