It was not meant to do this but over the years, each and every religion turned into this. When you think about it, all religions were formed in order to give the people a code of conduct to live by. Certain rituals may have been added in order to differentiate one religion from the other, but the ultimate objective always was to get a group of people to listen, learn and then practice how to live in peace and harmony with one another.

Most religions, unfortunately came with the fallacy of not containing the mechanism to adjust itself with the changing times. Hence sooner or later each religion, and the rituals of each religion became outdated and even impractical. The public at large and the leaders of some old-fashioned religions saw this and applied common sense to the practices of their religions. However, there were, and still are, many religions which could not make these adjustments. Through this confusion we saw the emergence of certain despotic leaders who used their religion to control the masses that were following that particular religion. Most of the time it was and is, being done to fulfill their own lust for power or their inability to change with the time. Bad leaders created bad followers. Main purpose of religion was not to scare or control the masses but sadly, this is how it ended up being.

Of course it used to control the masses among other things too! The King James Bible was written to control the peasants back in the day

Yeah, you could put it that way, moreso that the masses always seem to be the poor, the underprivileged...sometimes it seems like it's more to appease the masses.

That may not be it's purpose, but it is often used to do so. There is no question that different religious leaders use their position and religion to influence behavior and actions.

Yes, it is a way to manipulate people. Think of how much control the churches used to have. They controlled EVERY thing. Now people go to church because they are afraid to die and need something to hang onto.
