you can kick the motor over and the kickstart won't come back up on it's own you have to pull it back up with your hand what could be wrong? is their a spring on the internal part under the cover on the right side of the motor or is it external? but it looks to me like something has broke because if i look from the opposite side from the kicker i can see the shaft from the kicker!

Remove the kickstand lever and behind the cover there should be a spring that helps the kickstarter to return in it's proper position. It's not that bad of a job! pretty easy.

your kickstart return spring has either worn out or come out of place. I have a 1985 Yamaha Tri-Z 250 3 wheeler and I have to do the same thing. Pull it up by hand. It really doesn't bother me, but if you want to get another return spring just try bikebandit.com if you can't get it from yamaha.

have a look to see if the engine casing around the kick starter is cracked.remove the gas tank lay the bike on it's side then remove the casing carefully, look for a spring around the kick shaft. it may have slipped out of it's retaining hole or the end of the spring may be broken..

you are right, the spring in your kick is broken, you will need to replace the spring with a new one.
check for other damage when the engine is opened.
