This is a BIG question and there's no easy answer, I think. The ideal answer and the one I really believe is 'no', such expectations are neither naive nor unrealistic. I harbor the same feelings and share your disappointment. I also have the same general opinion of our current president. Politicians have a responsibility to the people whom they serve, and that's us. But there are practical issues of needing to get things done in cooperation with those who have differing opinions and beliefs, so compromise is inevitable. Sadly with some politicians that might include some of their youthful idealism. Add to that the insipid situation of politicians needing lots of dollars to get re-elected while the folks representing special interests are waiting in the wings waving mucho dollars in the air. But we, the general population, are also partially responsible. Our responsibility does not end on election day. We should be paying attention to what is going on at city hall, in the state capital and in Washington. We need to be writing to and phoning our representatives with our opinions and insights. If you and I remain silent, then others who wish to exert control will hold sway perhaps with disasterous results. Keep your pride! Don't give up! Become better and better informed about important issues and get involved to support people in whom you can believe. Stay in touch with your representatives and let them know what you think. As for me, the candidate for November 2008 who most excites me for President is Barak Obama - and I am a Republican.

Until I read your question (an excellant question, by the way) I didn't realize how much I missed that feeling of pride in my country that you refer to. I can remember the chills that ran through me whenever I heard our National Anthem or America the Beautiful or We Are The Champions. But those chills of pride have been replaced by a fearful dread of what those that lead by fear and appeals to our prejudices will do next to remain in power. If we lose our expectations of greatness in the U S government because they seem futile and unrealistic, we my never regain them and the American Dream will become a nightmare. Fortunately, I think there are people in both parties that may fit the bill. I only pray we make a good choice this time. If we deserve a good leader, we'll get one.

No it isn't. And yes i do believe one has the self discipline and integrity to finally get us upon the right track for a change instead of this sadistic illusion we have all been fed for so many years. I believe Ron Paul could get us back on a solid foundation once again. Without that, everything else is in vain and quite frankly, moot. Do we allow history to keep just repeating itself through a lie, or do we reestablish the foundation of which this nation was being originally built upon? My preference is the latter of these two. Thanks

When I see and hear John Edwards, I believe him as being a moderate, who could consolidate a number of segments in our culture and political world together to solve problems. He has little negative personal factors, he is a man of character, honorable, and as a trial attorney, helped many victims of corporate America recoup the financial losses due to unfair business practices. His wife is undergoing a personal struggle with her health, and they have courageously put that battle for her life up for public knowledge. That will also bring about the need of a better healthcare system, especially women who suffer from cancer, and for other terminal diseases as well. It will also help to keep stem cell research in the forefront as an issue we should all face. Edwards is a compassionate man who deserves a chance, and we deserve a chance to have a President like John Edwards.

Yes, I see several like the Gov. of New Mexico, Richardson, Obama, Edwards and Hillary and best of all, Albert Gore. Gore is the man of the hour and the most prepared for the job in the Nation. Go Albert Gore!

Unfortunately Honor, Character,Truth, Respectability ( and I will add Integrity) does not get them votes. Unfortunately people won't vote for them if they tell the truth and they don't like how that affects them. They'll believe the other guy because he's telling them what they want to hear.

i hope it never becomes unrealistic to expect that . its when our expectations get lowered that disfunction gets into the mix....they must all be held accountable whichever party they belong to. and so should we if something is way out of place we need to scream about it.......
