I bought a 2002 civic in 04 and the alignment was always perfect, but now when i let go of the steering wheel it veers to the right slightly. How did this happen, did i hit a curb or something? Does it need to get fixed? Any long term effects?

Is it a cheap fix?

Misalignment can happen because of several reasons. A good alignment specialist can tell you if your car is out to bad. It can cause premature tire wear and can wear out other front end parts. In my area it generally cost 50.-75.00 dollars for a front end alignment. In the long run, it saves on tires and makes driving much more desirable.

Check all the tires' pressures before doing or buying anything. If they are low, which I suspect, then adjust them to proper inflation. This should cure your problem, if it really is a problem. Cars are normally aligned to pull slightly to the right. This is done for safety if you fell asleep while driving, the car would pull off to the shoulder instead of into the oncoming lane. The potential for disaster is lessened by a car pulling to the right then traveling straight or pulling to the left. In Britain and the Bahamas, the opposite is done because they drive on the other side.

Only you know if you hit a curb. We do not. A hard impact to the wheels can cause misallignments.

Or you could have hit a pot-hole in the road. Your tire wear will be uneven with your alignment off, and if it goes on for too long with hard wear on just part of the tire, the life of your tires will be drastically shortened.

Best to get it fixed. Not only that, but getting it fixed will make it less likely that you accidentally veer into the ditch or into another car.

The tires can wear unevenly. It will not perform as well in hard turns or manuvers. Braking hard may pull it to one side. Hitting a curb can do this-it doesn't have to be at high speed to do it. You could also have worn front end parts or a strut problem. The next time you get an oil change, if a mechanic ( not one of those oil change places ) is doing it you might ask that he look over the front end of the car. That will rule out obvious problems. If this concerns you a lot, or if it gets worse, take it in to a reputable mechanic for this specific problem.

Yes alignment matters! "How did this happen, did i hit a curb or something?".... I don't know, did I hit a pole? Why would you ask us that?

You may just need to get your tires checked. Or it may be something more serious like a worn ball joint. Either way it's your saftey, and if you live in the buffalo, NY area, it's my saftey too. Get it fixed, the long term effects could be death.

Yes, Yes , and Yes. Every time you hit a curb it puts your car a little more out of alignment. Fix now, unless you want to cause improper tire wear, which can and will cause possible accident due to bad/ bald spot wear. Also improper tire wear affects car performance on efficiency

Yes it needs to be fixed if you don't want your tires or cv joints to wear out sooner than they should. . Alignment should be checked regularly, as there are a lot of things that can throw your steering out of alignment.

yeah hitting a curb or running something over can knock out the alignment and yes its something you need to fix because if you leave it alone too long you risk uneven wear on your tires and could cause a blow out and/or would have to replace tires more often.

yeah alignment matters but if it only veers to the right a little bit that still could be natural because the street is arched and it should go to the right a little bit.
