there are many free anti-virus programs available such as avgfree mcafree free, dr pc, free scans from norton, yahoo has a free norton scanner, and there are several freeware anti-virus programs available. use any or all of them to eliminate any malware. once removed, be sure to get or keep a couple anti-virus programs and run them at regular intervals. avgfree can be configured to scan daily, weekly etc. you can also hget defender from ms for free. just be sure the programs you use , if more than one, arte compatible.
i have norton internet 2007 and i cannot use ms defender or live one care since they conflict when loaded on the same system.
whichever you use, there are enough free ones available to use that pourchasing one is usually not necessary for most people.
additionally, if you will go to callingid.com, you can get a free program which identifies any website as to whether it is a good site, a low risk, medium risk, or high risk site. it doesn't scan any malware, but many medium and high risk sites exist and can be the easiest source for becoming infected with malware. there is also a second free program which is also available and identifies some other facts about the sites you visit. i recommend you get them both, if for no other reason than to know who own the site and where it is located. if you find a suspicious site, you can report it as suspect, and also get warned when they have information about suspect sites.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Unfortunately, more advanced modern malware has figured out how to beat the majority of spyware checkers. Even AVG from Grisoft, which I still use myself.
http://forums.spywareinfo.com is a great resource for getting rid of bad malware infestations. Trained volunteers will take you step-by-step through the process of cleaning your computer using a free progam called HijackThis. It's a free service - they do it out of human decency and a vicious hatred for spyware. HijackThis is the most powerful tool out there for removing malware, but it requires expert guidance to use safely.

An important thing to keep in mind, regardless of which anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and firewall you use -
( http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx ) is to keep it UPDATED, just as it is important to make sure you have all windows critical and security updates +
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Note: The way I have mine set is to only notify me that updates are availiable, but to not download them automaticaly. Then I can check to be sure I get just the ones I want. I then click on "custom", and after the updates have been downloaded I look them over to see which ones I want, then disconnect from the net, disable firewall and anti-virus program, and then install the updates, and then re-enable the firewall and anti-virus programs before reconnecting to the net.
