I have a Samsung 56" 1080i DLP that I purchased from amazon.com around the holidays. I also have the DIRECTV HD setup.
When a game is on in HD ( Versus, NBC, or FSN ) there is not anything better.
I also have a 37" Olevia 1080i LCD in my bedroom and it looks pretty good too.
You'll find that the SD games look less than spectacular after viewing HD games.
Football, golf, and just about any sport looks wonderful in HD!
Enjoy!

Well you cant really go by what you are seeing on the screen at the store. If you were in a Discount store like target or walmart they are usually not set up with a HD feed to show the customers the TV's true potential. Bestbuy and Circuit City usually set this up better, especially CCity.
You got to think of things like how much are you willing to spend. Do you want a flat screen like a LCD or Plasma TV. Or do you have enough room for a projection or large CRT.
From what I understand is that the flat panel CRT are actually supposed to give you the best picture. But they get very heavy and bulky and I think 40" is the largest from Sony.
I have an older Hitachi CRT projection. But I was always impressed to the picture quality it produced compared to even some of the newer models from other brands.
Nowadays, I would suggest a LCD projection with DLP technology.
And sports do look a lot more interesting in HD.

Yes hd's in stores do look crappy, since many tv's are hooked up to one hd feed, thus reducing the quality output to each t.v. However hockey in high-def looks great. Depending on where you are there should be Fox Sports in hd as well the nbc games that are over the air hd (over the air is higher quality than hd through cable or satellite since there is no signal compression). Anyway the main thing to realize is refresh rate. Lcd's have a longer refresh rate resulting in pixelation when watching fast-moving action (i.e. hockey). Plasma's have a much much faster refresh rate and there is no noticeable pixelation when watching sports. Also micro-projection may be the way to go, they are typically cheaper and can achieve 1080p resolution (necessary for blu-ray, etc) and have a refresh rate similar to plasmas. I have a panasonic plasma and a sony sxrd microprojection, and hockey looks great on both sets, don't be scared you'll be amazed at the picture clarity, especially nbc's broadcast.
model used: Sony Sxrd 60"
Panasonic Plasma 42"
Good luck!

hd is the way to go, if you get a hd package the versus channel has games in hd.the only thing i hate is that when the puck gets shot at the net there is an angle that you see the puck and net and you don't know if it's in or if keeps going, widescreen games are great because you see more of the playing surface, and more expressions on players faces, i have a 51 sony rear projection

I have a 60in. Sony LCD projection t.v. , and it is great for hockey. I am a diehard redwings fan, and love watching them on the big screen. The picture is wonderful, and hockey is one of the best things to watch on it.

An HD TV is the best bet, you never notice the difference until you compare them. Get a big screen HD TV if you can afford it.

well if you look at the tv's in the store, they look crappy cuz they are all hooked up to one feed and it makes the amount of input to each tv lower than it would be at home.
