I think recently I'd go with Cinderella Man or Seabiscuit. Neither made that much and both were really well done. I can't put It's A Wonderful Life in this category as it was in the top 6% of box-office draws when it came out. It actually finished just ahead of another great Xmas movie, Miracle on 34th Street.

This is an interesting question and certainly bias. If you look at "flop" strictly by numbers, then you have to look at Oscar buzz that reincarnates movies. I agree with this philosophy, so my answer is a box office "flop" that is on every top 20 list, certainly mine. "The Shawshank Redemption". Magnificent.

This honour goes to the wondeful "The shawshank redemption" made only a couple of mills but is one of my (and millions of other people's) all time favorites.
great acting from tim robins and Morgan freeman and the guy who played the warden, great director (don't know his name but he also directed the equally brilliant 1999 film the Green mile. the end twist was pretty damn good as well.
aisde from being a box-office flop it didn't do well at the oscars either, it was nominated for couple of big oscars deservingly but lost out to forrest gump starring Tom hanks which was good but noway near as good as TSR and they ask why people hate the OSCARS??
see it if you haven't already, truely spectacular stuff.

Cinderella Man. It showed a true picture of life in the Great Depression and showed that Max Baer (father of "Jethro" on the Beverly Hillbillies) was a brutal psychopathic killer in the days before boxing had real rules to keep people safe.

I liked "Lake Placid" a monster crocodile movie with a sense of humor. It came out at the same time as the much more publicized "Deep Blue Sea" about killer sharks, and is so much better than that turkey.

I got to say "cinderella man" i thought it was deep and real and really really nice and since it was based on a true story made it even more deep but i guess it just didn't really get that much attention as i thought it would.
