Being that leather is essentially just a hide, it will absorb moisture, you need to buy a good leather cleaner and find someone in your area that treats leather and have it sealed. This will not completely prevent this from happening, but it keeps dirt and debris from showing, and it will when it's moist.
If cleaning and airing does not treat this, you need to buy a new band.
Also if you want to try it, I heard tomatoe soup or paste works!

In my experience it's best to just take the watch into a shop and find a new band. They're relatively inexpensive and fairly easy to replace.

take a damp cloth and wipe ure band thoroughly
then keep ure bad in the sunlight for a few hours...make sure the sunlight is is nice and strong.....
it'll definitely kill the smell
