Double check with local law enforcement as to city ordinances about carrying weapons. Do not trust "expert advice" from us; most of us (including myself) are not from Texas and we are not lawyers expert in Texas law.
In most places, transporting firearms may be done in locked gun safes or carrying cases designed for the firearm. If you are not allowed to carry concealed, keep it in plain sight and make sure you do not go anywhere that forbids firearms (schools, hospitals, courthouses, etc). It is also a good idea to keep it unloaded if you are simply transporting it. If you are using it for protection, then an unloaded weapon is rather pointless. Again check with the local police or sheriff's office before walking around with a firearm.

While transporting, weapon must be in plain site and not concealed in any manner. The ammunition must be disassociated from the weapon either in the trunk of the vehicle or separated in such a manner that the ammunition cannot be loaded into the weapon while the vehicle is in motion. If stopped by law enforcement, you must tell the officer right away that you have a weapon and show him its location, and answer any pertinent questions concerning the reason for transportation.
If your using it for protection, you HAVE to have a concealed weapon permit. No such thing as carrying one for protection if you don't. You can however, transport any weapon. Has to be unloaded, and see above :)
