Set up a collection box at work. I work in a building with 40 other people, who go through an unbelievable amount of soda. You can do the same thing at church for big events or youth night. You might talk to some of the local schools about doing that too, though many of them are moving away from offering soda. Many developments and complexes have general use recycling bins for aluminum; you can probably get as much as you need from them.

Collect from door to door or the best way is to ask from restaurant. I have tried before as in Singapore we have small small eating place (we called it Coffee Shop). I try to talk to the boss that I need to collect the can small opener(a charity company promise to change 2000 small can opener for a wheel chair, where we donate the wheel chair to elderly home). In one week I manage to collect 1000 pieces. So within two weeks I can donate one wheel chair. Maybe you can try.

You could walk/drive around neighborhoods with a trash bag and see if people would be willing to donate their cans or some of their cans.
Tell them you need them for an art project or scavenger hunt or something exciting. People like to be a part of things like that.

We used to go to the ball fields early in the morning after softball games and collect many cans. Go very early as we used to have competition.
You could ask bars and/or restaurants, but they probably recycle them.
