Tradition. When I get married, I will take my hubbie's last name because the kids have his last name, and we are a family. When I have kids, I want us all to have the same last name.

In geneology and ancestor tracking, this is the way they track. Last names. How do our future generations know that Sally Smith married John Jones if their names don't match?

I believe the family needs to have the spoken/written symbolism of being a family unit by having the same last name. If it's been the man's last name for so many years, then why change the tradition? I like my last name, it's who I am and who I've been. But I can't wait to feel like I belong within this family by taking his last name. It feels closer.

Why not use your maiden name as your middle name? Personally, the marriage I ended, I never did change my name. The one I am going into later this year, I will change it.

I took my husbands name.

I wanted his name because, I feel that when we got married, we where no longer 2 people. We where a unit. 2 people that will always be on each others side. I wanted his name because I was on his side.......i know silly sounding as i read this, but i dont know how to word it.......i dont know the words for my feelings, sorry. hope it makes sense to you.

then compromise and get it hyphenated as MR and MRS JONE-SMITH it'll give both names to both partners. Personally I will be more than happy to carry my fiances name when it comes time for our joyus day!
