I don't know why they killed him, but let me tell you I cried. When I read the book I did not see the point of his death and I still don't. But I'm hoping the new book in july will give us some clues as to why the greatest wizard was killed.

The following are pure speculation of mine:
Dumbledore died in order for Severus Snape to live.
If Dumbledore was not murdered, Snape would die because he would be Breaking the Unbreakable Vow.
Your next question: Why would Dumbledore sacrifice himself in order to save Snape?
Answer: Because Dumbledore believed that Snape is a good man and he will be a great use for the OotP since he alone has the ability to learn what the Dark Lord's plans are.
At that point of the story (The Lightning Struck Tower), what is the significance of Dumbledore's life?
You might answer: He could assist Harry in finding the remaining Horcruxes. He could also aid Harry in his final battle with the Dark Lord by means of weakening the latter.
The argument is: Dumbledore believes that Harry could search the Horcruxes on his own. Another reason is that Dumbledore believes that the help that he could give to Harry is less important than the life of Severus. Next, Dumbledore could not help Harry in his final battle because Harry is the only one who have "the power the Dark Lord knows not." Also, Dumbledore could not weaken Voldemort because, as you might have remembered on the OotP, Voldemort, in fact, is the one who was able to weaken Dumbledore, and not the other way.
Dumbledore asked Snape to kill him because in this way, Draco would not be liable for a crime, and Severus will be saved from the claws of the Unbreakable Vow.
Next question: Why did Snape did the Unbreakable Vow, then?
Answer: Because Dumbledore instructed him to do all he could in order to make the Death Eaters and Voldemort believe that he is evil, so that Snape could get information continuously from the villain. Unfortunately, Narcissa asked him to do the Unbreakable Vow, and the act of disagreeing would be a less point for Snape's acting that he is a Death Eater.

The Harry Potter books are essentially bildungsromans-- they're books about growing up and growing as a person. Dumbledore is supposedly a powerful wizard who has achieved some pretty fantastic things in his lifetime, but as the time for Harry to face Voldemort approaches, Harry needs to fend for himself without being able to rely on the one strong figure who has always kept an eye on him and has had his best interests at heart.
There's no way that Dumbledore would allow Harry to face Voldemort on his own, and Harry can't have Dumbledore by his side for the fight. We've been reading about Harry since he was only eleven years old, and we've been seeing him grow up and mature, so now is about the time for him to step into adulthood.
It's sort of a staple of the standard hero cycle-- think of Lord of the Rings or any other number of books where the main hero (usually an underdog) loses their mentor and faces their enemy/foil/antagonist on their own.

i don't know word for word what j.k. said but i think it's along the same lines as the reason she killed sirius. Harry has had a hard life and she felt that for his character, he needed to lose those close to him to give him the strength to fight later on. He had planned to stay with sirius, but this was before he knew that staying at the dursley's gave him protection. He started dreaming about living a normal life, but in reality that would never be possible for harry. so dumbledore's death is just further fuel for harry to use in his battle with dumbledore. He may hate snape even more now, but he would not want dumbledore's death to go to waste so he will fight even harder to defeat voldemort. but i wish dumbledore hadn't died because I liked his character

I cried she is sooo evil. its all snape's fault he should of never taken that pack for malfoy. and malfoy should of learned better than to be a dark hand. I think that dumbledore needed to be killed to set off a plot for the seventh book. a few years back she mentioned that many people are going to die in the upcoming books, i think this was after book 4 and so far everyone harry held dear has died. his parents (book 1) sirius (book 5) dumbledore (book 6) i heard that she's going to kill harry off in book 7 which is coming out JULY 21 2007. cant wait.
to increase the utter hatred that harry already feels for voldemort to make harry nonemotional when about to kill voldemort because voldemort has caused harry so much pain and loss. well thats what i believe

well I guess you should read a very interesting book to understand why: How do write a godamn book by James Frey.
It is all a matter of technique and mercadology. It is important to make the heroe's life miserable, for the readers to cling to the story. I guess Dumbledore was a central character, close to Harry,so by killing him, Rawlings made him very lonely and vulnerable for the last book. why do you think so many copies are sold in advance....

Cause she had to, Its just the way the story goes. Hero gets close to a mentor. Mentor dies. Hero goes on alone. Hero saves the day. JKR said she cant make it to easy for Harry.
"The wise old wizard with the beard always dies."
