Because when you fall in a dream your body jolts because something is telling you that you're actually falling and you try to stop yourself from falling.

This isn't ALWAYS true. Often, yes. But some people actually experience the fall, & the consequences. This kind of dream has a quite different meaning than the one in which we wake up before the "disaster" hits. Dreams are complex & fascinating, there are NO simplistic "answers!" So, I would NEVER suggest an absolute.

This is not 100% true. I personally have been killed in many of my nightmares, only to have the nightmare end, and be thrown into a new nightmare. Basically though when you reach a certain point in your subconsciouses state your body experiences enough trauma to wake you up. Notice when you wake up, heart racing....sweat on your brow? Thats more input to you than someone shaking you awake with their hand. So you wake up.

There is an old theory that when this happens, we are about to die in our sleep, and our body senses it. Thus we wake up. Of course, that's probably not the case. I think it's a reflex, the same way you would tense your body if you were really falling. When your body tenses, you wake up.

Its a body nerve reaction that is sent to your brain to wake up in response. I hate dreams that inolves falling. NOT a good feeling.
