I am considering renting a 16' penske truck towing a 4 wheel car carrier. Any ideas what kind of gas mileage I can expect fully loaded with a car in tow.

As suggested already try to get a truck with a diesel engine. The gas engine will get 5 - 7 MPG if you try maintaining the legal speed limit. If you will be crossing state lines also ask about what states the truck is permitted for.

I used to rent 20ft flatbeds and one time I had to rent a gas engine one instead of the diesel. It cost me double the fuel.

If you can, get a diesel, maybe try Hertz. It will make a huge difference in the cost of fuel if you can.

I seemed to me when I rented one I had to stop about every 130 miles to put gas in it again.
