Someone who has read the books, you may be able to answer this rather better than everybody else. The way I see it, it is the next journey into the afterlife. Gandalf was already dead and Frodo had died on his journey. What do you think?

Hi there,

Just to clarify, neither Frodo nor Gandalf died when they boarded the ship at the Grey Havens, or Mithlond as its also known.

Elves leave the shores of Middle Earth for a number of reasons and in the end, their time passed and it was time to return to the Blessed Realm, the Valinor. This is NOT afterlife, quite the opposite. This is where the Elves and the ring bearers heal and this is where Sam also eventually sailed.

With Elves, they will leave the Middle Earth when they get weary of it and want to go to the Valinor, where the Valar originally sheltered their kind.

Hope this clarifies a few things.

J.R. Tolkien was a devote Christian and his books have alot of symbolisms that lead back to his religion. Frodo didnt die on his journey, but him traveling with the elves to the new land was more or less a metaphor to going to heaven

They weren't dead, they went to their world. A heaven in our terms because their mission is done. It is the time of humans to rule the earth now.
