Some chronic users claim that they see great details in things that usually they would take for granted, and visit secluded corners of the mind while on marijuana. Some artistic people I know claim such things. Is this true or are they just high?

Your brain is a muscle, you have to exercise it every day to keep it working at optimal performance. If you are lazy, you're going to stay lazy whether or not you're doing drugs. Drugs just may complicate said laziness by making you apathetic at the same time. Most drug abusers continue using to stay content.

When I was 17, I graduated from high school and said "phuck education forever".... Luckily I started smoking marihuana and it got me interested in many things: the arts, music, spiritualism, and of course drugs and drug culture. I started reading everything I could get my hands on and even ended up taking a full semester at college (something I NEVER saw myself doing).

Today, I understand the importance of a good education and I'm glad I was reading books in elementary school while others were watching TV. I don't smoke tobacco and I rarely drink, but I still smoke marihauna and even dabble in the occasional hallucinogen.
I'm still learning and teaching myself every day. Will I be a Rhodes Scholar? No. Will I be a brain surgeon? No. But I seriously doubt that I would be heading in those directions even if I had stayed clean and sober through high school and young adulthood. I like who I am and who I'm turning out to be, and if I'm even slightly more stupid, or more intelligent, because of my drug habits, than so be it. It hasn't changed my life for the better or worse.

It makes you dumber. Take a very smart person (such as the hospital administrator in the earlier example), they may seem intelligent, but they are dumber after smoking pot than they would be otherwise. THC coats your brain cells, and everytime you get high, you lose ability for your cells to transmit the electric pulses that make you able to think. I was a pot head in high school. I could do really long algebra in my head (teachers thought I cheated cause I never showed my work). After quitting smoking pot, I still qualify for Mensa, graduated college (criminal justice), and such, but I can tell my memory is not as sharp as it was (and I'm only 27). I can barely add long numbers in my head, forget algebra.

Oh, and the part about seeming smarter? BS. People high on pot latch onto a simple thought and overexamine it. They focus on one leave, and see it closely, but are clueless they are in a forrest. And yes, I know the professionals who smoke pot. My step dad was dealer to them. They are not a bright as you think.

I think it has neither affect. Some claim it makes you stupid, but I know a lot of PROFESSIONALS, that are extremely bright and still smoke pot. One is a hospital administrator. I think some people who have no life and just hang out and get stoned all the time are just stupid in general, because they don't have to use that brain of theirs, so it's pretty much wasting away without the help of the drugs.

It won't make you either smarter or dumber, that was determined by your DNA long ago. What it will do is relax your body and mind, allowing you slow down and actually observe the world around you and your experience of it. Usually as close to the Zen state as most westerners ever get.

my opinion is neither. and it would also depend on how much is used. i think it effects the mind less than alcohol and can mellow out high strung person so that they pay attention where before they rush through everything. I also think users will say anything to make it seem ok even claiming it makes them smarter when it doesn't.

Just my opinion, but a buddy that I have known all of my life has used pot daily for over 25 years, and I can tell first hand, not second hand, but first hand, that his mind is duller in recent years than it has been. He was one of the smartest guys in school, now he is kind of "zoned out" a lot of the time.

Its kind of sad.

Point of view is everything. If your definition of dumb is lacking dexterity or the ability to think fast in a critical situation, then, yes, grass will make you dumb. However, to appreciate the color of your dreams and gain a new perspective on what is, is very smart. It is open, curious, alive. Not static. Not judgmental.

Right, may be. Don't expect to figure out how to split an atom while you're high on pot.

It makes you crazy. The craziness wears off a few weeks after you stop smoking pot.
