In a sense yes, there's libel laws on the books that even a tabloid must follow, it's regulated via the civil judicial system. For example if a celebrity can prove that a tabloid irresponsibly printed a story that it knew was false then the celebrity can sue for personal and "punitive" damages. One of the first big successful lawsuits against the National Enquirer was won by actress-comedian Carol Burnett - the case remains a landmark in the study of libel cases involving celebrities.

I don't think so. It would be against our amendment, freedom of speech I think. Besides, America is too wrapped up in pop culture to see tabloid press hindered by the government.

We can't let the government take on too much. Remember, this all comes out of our taxes!

You mean regulate the content? Not much.
They have been sued sometimes for lying about somebody, but sometimes they have won on the basis that everybody knows their stories are fiction anyway.
It's the free market that has to control them, not the government.
The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
