i prefer deleting then formatting.

You can just delete the contents. Note that these items can be recovered using any kind of recovery software. The entries are just deleted from the File Allocation Table. If you want to completely erase this info, then you need to format (like when you are lending it to a colleague). You don't usually need to format a pen drive. If bad sectors develop, then it is advised to format the pen drive. Also, if you want to change the format of the pen drive from FAT32 to say NTFS, then you need to format it. My suggestion is to just let it be.

i would suggest you should first take a back-up somewhere , if its a important data for you

and deleting the pen-drive would do the work , formatting needs to be done in some of the cases :

1. your pen-drive is working very slowly

2. its been infected by a virus and there is no other option left

3. as per requirements follow :)

i strictly recomend
that u delete every thing not format.formating is done for security reasons.there are many cases i have if u format there is a decrease in the capacity of the pen drive

just delete it. Format requires when u feel there may be a virus, or using in some other system which doesnot recognise ur pen drive.

formatting is not required everytime u use a pendrive.deleting contents will do.
formatting is needed when u carry out any specific functions like protecting a document from public view etc.

Avoid formating, you may simly delete the content if no longer required.
