does anyone know how I can get involved, even on a volunteer basis in things to catch internet predators, such as on the tv show "To Catch a Predator" where someone pretends to be underage and waits for someone to proposition her.
can I do it on my own and report to local police or do I need permission from someone.
I think this is an excellent use of anyone's time and would like to help keep kids safe but don't know how to get involved

To James- you are right and I agree with everthing you said which is exactly why I want to be involved- I can stomach it better than I can stomach thinking of it happening to a 'real' little girl and her possibly being talked into a meeting and getting raped or killed or hurt, and if I can help get them off the street and keep these kids safe its worth it
thanks for your answer

Most law enforcement and child protection groups do not recommend that "everyday" citizens get on their computer in the hopes of luring a predator to them because there is a good chance that you could actually interfere with an ongoing investigation by catching the attention of a predator who is already in the process of being lured in by someone associated with law enforcement.

Many states have very specific laws concerning this sort of thing as far as what is required in order to arrest these people and you could actually jepordize a possible conviction by doing it on your own.

If you are seriously interested in pursuing this, I would contact your local police department and ask about getting involved.

Your heart is in the right place. And I certainly agree with your ethics. But I think educating the kids to avoid ploys by predators would also be a worthy cause. And add to that educating parents as to how various websites operate so that they can more effectively monitor their kids' usage.

Kids are now constantly on places like "Myspace", "Xanga" etc. These have the potential for predators.

My youngest boy is now 15 years old and I still monitor his computer usage. For example: I never allow him on Myspace without the use of a proxy. And I don't allow him to have friends on Myspace unless he has met them in person previously.

Tactics like these can help reduce (but not eliminate) the threat of predators.

Can't tell you how to do that, but why would you want to hear those creeps talk that nasty stuff to a "supposively" child and it not make you sick to the stomach. Those guy need to have their privates cut off and thrown in the sea. They just make me sick, how could a grown man get turned-on by a child.

I believe Dateline, who does those shows, works with a company called Perverted Justice. Try Googling them and see what the deal is.

Catch 'em and then what??

You have no arrest authority. Exposing them is a great idea but you would need law enforcement approval for it.
