What is an indulgence?

A partial remission of temporal punishment due for a sin after the sin has been forgiven through the sacrament of penance. The theology of indulgences is based upon the concept that sin is always evil and that, even though the crime and the eternal punishment are forgiven in the sacrament of penance, divine charity and justice demand that the sinner pay for his crime. The fault and the eternal guilt, once forgiven sacramentally, are wiped away; yet some punishment remains to be satisfied in this life or in purgatory.

While the doctrine of indulgences was sound enough, the practice of demanding an offering as a necessary condition for certain indulgences inevitably prepared the way for serious abuses. The magnificent cathedrals of Europe and its older universities, hospitals, bridges, and other social and cultural projects are evidence enough that much of the money collected on the occasion of an indulgence was actually directed toward legitimate purposes; not a little, however, found its way into the pockets of greedy ecclesiastics and professional collectors.

Ironwood has this correctly answered, but I think your talking about the indulgencey whereby the sinner could purchase for a nominal fee, forgiveness of a specific sin which was inacted by Pope Leo X to help rebuild St. Peter's Basilica.

The more expensive the indulgence, the greater the sin you would be forgiven for. Considering your other question was why did Martin Luther take issue with indulgence, this is probably the answer you are looking for.

But, again, Ironwood is more correct because traditionally that wasn't what an indulgence was. It just seems to have been the spark that lit the fire under Martin Luther's hind quarters.

An indulgence is an 'instant gratifying' agent into your being. It may be alcohol, chocolate, gambling, sex...it is anything that makes that tingle in the back of your head something that you want more of. Instant gratification is wonderful and indulgence of your passion: food, alcohol, drugs. It is a desire that you feel you don't get enough of. "I really wanted Chinese food for dinner". I indulged myself...gave it to my mind and body. It is something you want..something that you have been thinking about giving yourself, but never did or haven't for a long time. Indulge...to yield or to gratify ones desires. Indulge once in awhile.

If you refer to Catholic Indulgence, an indulgence is a remission of the temporal punishment due to sin by doing certain acts and penances. Catholics believe that while we have been foregiven, we still have to have some kind of punishment due to our sins and we pay them more or less in purgatory. When we receive an indulgence our time and punishment in purgatory will be lessened.

Satisfying a want to feel emotionally enlightened.

Indulgence can lower blood pressure, relieve stress, and keep you sane overall.

But remember, too little and too much is a bad thing. Indulge in what you want and what makes you happy in moderation.

When the church is selling their holiness for money.

For example. You pay me (priest) money, and I will bring your ancestor from hell to heaven by giving part of my holiness to him/her since I am a priest / pope and has so much holiness.
