I'm in my last quarter of my freshman year in highschool and I played the clarinet in my schools marching band and I also was a freshman cheerleader for football and half of basketball season so I say do both.

Marching band is so much fun I met so many people and having like band camp in the summer before school started I met everyone in band and it made my first week of highschool so much easier knowing so many people. At first I didn't want to be in band I didn't want to strart off highschool being known as a bando or a band geek or w.e but now I can' t wait for marching season next year. A schools marching band is deffenitly more like a family than a band you have so many people that are there for you if you need them.

Cheerleading is fun I love it but the deffinitly did not love the other cheerleaders they hated me and no sorry to say when your a cheerleader you do not become instatly popular but it is fun. I don't think I'm going to be cheering my sophmore year in highschool

(if you choose to do band, if your schools marching band is a chair step band have fun learning how to march its a challenge ,if its not a chair step band then I can't really tell you anything about marching)

What a tough choice. You make more of a case for band. You have more experience with it than the cheer leading. Most schools make you audition for both. Cheerleaders are usually expected to do at least some gymnastics.

I did both in High School. I don't reccommend it. I had very little time to study. Cheerleading was cool, but I did way more with the band. We went to more places and met more people.

If you plan to continue your education after high school, it will be easier to get a scholarship or admittance to some colleges with the band experience than with the cheerleading.

Not all bands are full of geeks and nerds. We had all kinds of people in our band.

I don't think many people would turn down a chance to go out with a Chris Daughtery or Faith Hill because they might be in a band. Do You?

I've been in cheerleading and band for three years, and trust me, it's very possible to do both. It will probably tire you out during football season with so many practices, but it is a lot of fun. And there aren't many people who do both, so you will be unique. :]

As for advice on first-time tryouts, spirit is a huge part of your score. If you do pretty good on the cheer and chants but you look like you don't want to be there, you won't do that well. Do lots of facials. Be LOUD, but do not scream at the judges. You have to learn how to make your voice carry by yelling through your diaphragm.
Be verryyy tight with your motions. You can't be too sharp. Practice everything over and over and over. You should be practicing a couple hours every day. Repetition is the key.

Good luck and have fun!

band is the most awesomeest thing ever! I was reading the other answers b4 i answered: it depends on what school u go 2 . But lots of kids in marching band having really hot/cute/handsome boyfriend/girlfriends! My boyfriend is in the percussion. He's really sweet. Of course he's one of the ones whos totally obsessed but not a lot of people r. And its not that if u choose cheer ull get better guys.... Ive heard a lot of kids in my High school think the cheerleaders r.... welll..... 'jerks' for lack of a non-badish word. Band really rocks! Seeing the formations and such form is really fun! Its demanding (depends on school) mentally and physically (again depends on school) make sure ur up 4 the challenge! But over-all, if all goes well, u wont regret it! Good Luck!

PS Im a flute 2

The people that say the marching band isn't nerdy are the ones in the marching band. Cheerleading is the way to go. There is no such thing as a COOL marching band. See what I mean those words just don't belong in the same sentence.

as a memeber of the band i personally think you should go for band. not saying that cheerleading isnt good but you sound like more of a musician. 4 once marching band is alot of fun and our marching band interacts with the cheerleaders all the time and we have a lot of fun. in less words just stick to your 1st gut instinct. and you dont have to be a professional flute player to just try do your best.and if u want to do cheerleading then i sugguest you try going to a gymnatics class and maybe learning some flips and stuff. they dont look easy haha.. hope you make the right descion

I recomend marching band. I did it all through high school and because of it I traveled all across the nation and had the greatest time of my life. You could always try out for cheerleading, but without knowing any of the acrobatics you may be a bit behind girls who have been gymnastic since they were 4. And every year they require you to know more and more moves. On top of cheerleading costs, you'd probably have to take gymnastics at the same time. Do what you think would make you happiest. Marching band gave me the greatest friends I ever knew, and my fiance.

I play flute.
Last year was my first year to do Marching Band. I DID NOT want to do it, i thought it would be to much work and be nerdy and to much effort.
My mom forced me to do it, and I LOVED it. You could not have more fun. I dont know how it is where you live. But at our highschool the band Dancees ALOT! in the stands to show support and have a good time. Yeah cheerkleaders get to cheer, but Marching Band is so much fun. You also get to go on trips and UIL, and Marching Contest. I would recommend it to anyone who asked. It was such a great opporitunity.
It takes alot of work, but when you march your first half time show you will think "whoa that was amazing and so worth it"
I thought I would be really nervous. But it went by so quick. Basicly its a great experience.
and about the money you proablyu will have to pay for like the marching uniform and shoes. but i bet its alot less then cheerleading(from waht i have heard from my friends)
and ppl dont think your a nerd. unless they are complete dumbnuts that dont know whats good from whats bad

and what that one person said about guys not going to the band ppl to get girlfriends. If the guy is so shallow that he wouldnt like you if you werent a cheerleader, he isnt good enough.

I am personally in marching band. (I play the mellophone) But this decision is totally based on your skills and what you think that you were ment to be in. In our school we have basketball season cheerleading and football season cheerleading. If you're one of those people that like to try something new the go into cheerleading. If you like to be with more of your friends and want to continue your band thing you have going then go for that. I think that you should try cheerleading the first year and if you don't like it then go to marching band. And vice versa. You can always try new things without having a set path.
And those people that said that if you go into marching band are lame and don't get any dates is lying. But who knows schools can be strange. In my school some pretty popular people are in marching band and you know people just don't care. And it's the same thing that goes for cheer leaders that they are stuck up. Most are really nice people so those steriotypes are completely lame.

Honestly, I would go for band. If you are even thinking about attending college-band would be the way to go. I recieved a full tuition scholarship and I wasn't even a music major. Seriously, no one will care if you were in band or if you were a cheerleader. After graduation, no one will be sitting back thinking "Yeah, i knew her because she was a cheerleader"..it'll be more like "I knew her because she did X with the community, she helped me by doing X, etc" You'll also find out that some of the guys that go after cheerleaders, are true dumb jocks that couldn't spell their last name if it wasn't stenciled on the back of their uniforms.
